Short & Unfinished Original Written Works by Ais
I have far more stories and works that are in progress, snippets, or will never be finished. I'm placing some of the more interesting ones here for two reasons. 1) It seems a shame to let them dwindle in obscurity forever on my hard drive, and 2) Maybe through bringing them out into the open and putting them in an easily accessible place, others will read these snippets and let me know if they are interested in seeing more in those worlds. Maybe even just having them in my face all the time will encourage me to write more.
So -- PLEASE, if you are interested in anything you read here, let me know! If you want to see more written somewhere, having someone show interest or give encouragement may very well be all the incentive I'll need to write more. The continuation may even be dedicated to you :)
By the way, I'll warn you that a lot of these stop abruptly, some even in the middle of a sentence though I tried to edit those to at least finish the thought. Many don't have titles, either, so in those cases I will just name it something that makes sense to me as keywords for the story theme. Also, I haven't necessarily edited all of these.
Current Story Worlds/Characters
The following stories are parts of worlds or have characters in more active story lines that I am either currently working on or I feel that I am more likely to continue/finish in the future.
- Wicked - "Listen. I just... I don't feel safe. I was trying to do the dishes and I broke one. And... and I feel like... I'm not alone."
- outcast - I know it's a lie. Even if I turn back, even if I give up this tenuous freedom I'm holding now--there's no guarantee they won't kill me on sight.
Contests & Entries
The following two stories were apparently beginnings of stories I was writing to enter to the Wabash Review. I probably started one, didn't like it, and tried starting another. Somehow, both have the theme of buildings and urban life as well as the weather and sky.
- cigarette and rain - Eli leaned against the windowsill, staring outside with half-lidded eyes. A cigarette dangled from his fingers as he pensively flicked the ashes out into the area below. Maybe those tiny glowing ashes could have ignited something on fire if they had not sizzled into darkness in the arc down to the ground.
- changing sky - To her, it was just a moment in the darkening evening, lost in a field in the middle of summer. To the sky, she didn't even exist. But to Lorelei, it would be a reason to smile for far into the future.
Stand Alones
The following stories are not connected to anything and don't appear to have been written in order to enter into contests, etc. They are the least likely to be continued or expanded in the future.
- dead-end skyway - It seemed strange to think of an abandoned umbrella when it was snowing all around him, occasional gusts of wind flattening his clothes and making his inner ears ache from the cold.
- The Meaning of the Seasons - There was something about the glass, about being separated by something solid but transparent. She felt as if her vision could infiltrate anything by staring through that window. Maybe she could even see into peoples' souls, if she just waited long enough.
- Crossing Lights - The door to the courtyard loomed before us, its miniscule window proclaiming an overcast winter day complete with tiny floating snowflakes and a pure white sky. There was the faintest of sprinklings of snow upon the ground, little more than the aftermath of the sky shaking out its dandruff. I grimaced, wondering where that analogy had come from.
